Scotland, Vacations With A Difference
Scotland offers the best scenery in the U.K. making it a popular holiday destination. Countless tourists choose the City of Edinburgh as their primary destination, whereas some choose something a little different. The following article takes a look at Scottish vacations and some of the things to do when in Scotland. The article also introduces the Wickerman Festival.
With such a diverse countryside the list of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are cycling vacations. The most common holidays are fishing or golf. With the country of Scotland being the home of golfing it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from at least one first class golf course. With the Rivers Tay, Tweed and Spey you can almost be certain of an amazing days fishing. But what if you fancy an altogether different vacation?
Growing numbers of people are choosing music festivals their yearly vacation. Even though the majority of music festivals are enormous with the main aim of making money, you can discover a small number of family orientated music festival, for example the Wickerman Festival and Tartan Heart.
More of a music and arts festival, the yearly Wickerman festival takes place on a farm close to Dundrennan, Dumfries & Galloway approximately 5 miles away from the town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The event celebrates the classic cult movie, “The Wicker Man which features appearances by Sir Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Ingrid Pitt, Diane Cilento and Britt Ekland.
The first festival was held in July two thousand and two and was put together by Sid Ambrose, a local man. With little experience of putting together a music festival it is amazing that it still exists, especially when you think about the present economic climate. The festival has altered slightly each year and has an almost cult following itself.
Wickerman is immensely family friendly it has numerous child orientated activities for example, fairground rides, a mountain biking trek, various workshops and face painting. This can be easily proven by by visiting a search engine and searching for photos of Wickerman 2010 or simply visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Near to the festival site is Kirkudbright where you will find many locations used in the film for example Harbour Cottage (the bakery) and High Street Gallery which was used for May Morrison’s post office and sweetshop. You will find that there are many places worth visiting in Dumfries and Galloway and it is really worth spending a few days here so that you can visit all of the attractions. Popular destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Scottish bed and breakfast is nearly always excellent and is also very reasonably priced and far cheaper than staying in a hotel.
